South Africa is certainly one of the world’s most impressive scenery. Reputed for being the continent’s best Safari destination, South Africa also has to offer dramatic landscapes, beautiful beaches, unique vineyards and of course, the amazing Cape Town.
I had the chance to experience South Africa through a road trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town and it was definitely an incredible adventure.
Here is my top 4 to experience in South Africa.
1. SAFARI IN THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
The Kruger Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa and one of the world’s greater wildlife-watching destination. You’ll be able to spot the Big 5 (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhinoceros), but also Giraffes, Hippos, Hyenas, Crocodiles and many more (See Safari in the Kruger National Park article).
The Kruger Park is huge, 19.485 km² and offers a very different wildlife depending on the location. It is easily accessible by car and you can either self-drive or go on guided tours. “See article Safari in Kruger Park”.
2. HIKING IN THE DRAKENSBERG MOUNTAINS
Drakensberg means “Mountain of the dragons” and is situated on the eastern border of Lesotho. The Drakensberg was declared World’s Heritage site in 2000 and its dramatic landscape is one of the most breathtaking I’ve ever seen and it is definitely the best hiking spots in the country.
I stayed in the Giant Castle game reserve, in a place called Injisuthi. The road to get there was quite difficult, especially with a standard car but once there it was definitely worth it. They offer self-catering chalets, overlooking the mountains, and very nice self-hikes (not for beginners though). There is no service, no wifi, electricity just a few hours a day, a perfect place to enjoy nature.
3. THE WINELANDS
South Africa has also a lot to offer in terms of wine-producing area and cuisine. Most of the vineyards are located in the Western Cape province, easily accessible from Cape Town and offer a range of wine tasting, immersive experience, picnics in the parks and amazing cuisine.
The most famous Winelands are Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl or Durbanville. I personally only visited Durbanville and stayed in an amazing place called Meerendal Wine Estate. I spent one night in their fabulous boutique hotel overlooking the vineyards, had a very nice wine tasting and enjoyed their cuisine.
A lot of wine estate offer this type of experience and I highly recommend it, book in advance though it is very popular.
4. CAPE TOWN
==> See The Cape Town Guide
The Table Mountain, the facades of the Bo-Kaap, the wonderful beaches, the Kirstenbosch National Botanical, its culture, its cuisine, Cape Town offers a very unique atmosphere and delightful experience.
From hiking to shark caging, penguins, seals, history, restaurants, markets of all type. Cape Town is so beautiful, so surprising that you’ll want to return.
There is of course so much more amazing things to experience in South Africa. This top represents the highlights of my trip, what can’t be missed in my opinion.
I’d definitely love to go back to grow that list.
